Lombardy-Venetia was not an independent monarchy but an Austrian crown land administered under the Habsburg emperor, meaning Ferdinand I struck these coins as King of Lombardy-Venetia — a title entirely separate from his role as Emperor of Austria. The arrangement was a deliberate legal fiction maintained to satisfy Italian legal and commercial traditions that demanded a named king on the coinage rather than an emperor.
Ferdinand himself was epileptic and widely considered unfit to govern; real administrative power in the region rested with the State Conference in Vienna. The series ended with the 1848 revolts in Milan and Venice, which drove Austrian forces out temporarily before Radetzky's campaigns restored Habsburg control the following year.
