Reverse description Crowned and garnished shield of the Royal Arms, displaying the quartered arms of England, Scotland, Ireland, and the Hanoverian escutcheon removed, set within an ornate cartouche. The peripheral legend BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: encircles the shield, with the date divided by the mint mark (M for Melbourne or S for Sydney) in the exergue. The design derives from Benedetto Pistrucci's classic shield reverse as adapted for the sovereign series.
