The Concorde first flew on 2 March 1969, making 2019 the fiftieth anniversary of that maiden flight from Toulouse. Gibraltar has issued commemorative gold pieces under royal warrant for decades, leveraging its status as a British Overseas Territory to produce legal tender coinage that falls outside Royal Mint jurisdiction. The half sovereign specification — 22-carat gold at roughly 4 grams — maps directly onto the historic British half sovereign standard, which gave up circulating status in 1914 but has persisted as a bullion and commemorative vehicle ever since.
