Alderney's particular claim on D-Day commemoration is more than ceremonial. The island was occupied by German forces from 1940 until liberation in 1945 — the only part of the British Isles to experience full Nazi occupation — and its civilian population had been evacuated beforehand, leaving it largely depopulated for the duration. That history gives Alderney a standing in these anniversaries that purely metropolitan British issues cannot claim.
The half sovereign format here follows the standard 22-karat crown gold specification inherited from the Royal Mint, struck under licence.
