Additional information

Gibraltar has issued commemorative half sovereigns with some regularity, but the D-Day connection here is genuine: the territory served as the forward staging hub for Allied naval and air operations in the Mediterranean theater, and Eisenhower himself used the Rock's tunnel complex as his advance command post during the planning phases of Operation Torch in 1942. By June 1944, Gibraltar's strategic role had shifted, though its airfield remained critical for Atlantic convoy coordination throughout the campaign.
