Frederick I struck this issue in 1532, just a year before his death, during a reign defined by his careful neutrality on the Lutheran question — a pragmatic stance that kept Denmark from the confessional wars tearing apart neighboring territories. The half sølvgylden denomination itself was a direct response to the flood of South German and Netherlandish silver gulden circulating in Danish trade, an attempt to produce a domestically-struck equivalent that could compete on weight and fineness in Baltic commerce.
Galster UU#48 is among the scarcer documented varieties of this type. Surviving examples in any condition are infrequently encountered at auction.
