Additional information

The 1857 half skilling belongs to the final years of the rigsmønt system, introduced in 1813 following Denmark's state bankruptcy and the catastrophic loss of Norway to Sweden. By the 1850s the currency was already living on borrowed time — the rigsdaler decimal reform of 1854 had begun displacing the older skilling fractions, and bronze fractional pieces like this one were being phased out in favor of a rationalized coinage that would fully arrive in 1875 with the krone system.

Frederik VII never produced a male heir, a dynastic problem that ultimately triggered the 1863 succession crisis and the Second Schleswig War the following year.
