The Gepids seized Sirmium in 504 after expelling the Ostrogoths, and this coin reflects the political calculus that followed: a barbarian kingdom explicitly invoking the reigning Eastern emperor's name to legitimize its own authority without submitting to it. Anastasius I, ruling from Constantinople until 518, never formally recognized Gepid control of the city.
The distinctive large bust with flat back is specific to the Sirmium mint under Gepid administration and helps distinguish these issues from contemporary Byzantine production at other centers.
