The letters D and N appear on either side of the monogram, serving as flanking field marks abbreviating the royal title Dominus Noster (Our Lord). The entire device is enclosed within a beaded or laurel wreath border, a design convention commonly employed on late Roman and Ostrogothic small silver denominations.
