Reverse description Central field occupied by the distinctive royal monogram of Athalaric, the Ostrogothic king, rendered in an interlaced cruciform arrangement typical of late antique and early medieval regal monograms. The letters D and N flank the monogram on either side, serving as an abbreviated acclamation of the issuing ruler. The entire design is encircled by a beaded or dotted wreath border, a conventional decorative device of the period that frames the composition and distinguishes the reverse type within the Ostrogothic silver series.
