Chinese provincial food stamps — liangpiao — were rationing coupons issued by grain bureaus at the provincial, municipal, and county levels, functioning as a parallel paper economy that ran alongside currency from the 1950s until the system was formally abolished in 1993. Hebei Province issued its own series independently of national-level allocations, and the ½ shi jin denomination — half a market catty, roughly 250 grams — was the smallest practical unit, used for tofu, coarse grains, and flour top-ups at state-run outlets.
These were printed in enormous quantities but discarded immediately after use, which makes intact examples more elusive than their late issue date suggests.
