The papal arms, consisting of a crowned shield with the Braschi family heraldry of Pius VI, are displayed in the lower exergue. The circular Latin legend AVXILIVM DE SANCTO frames the composition, and the date 1777 appears in the lower field flanking the coat of arms. The design is deeply engraved with dynamic Baroque drapery and detailed cloud work. |

Pius VI's pontificate began in 1775 facing a papacy severely strained by Josephinist reforms sweeping the Habsburg territories and mounting Bourbon pressure on Church prerogatives across France, Spain, and Naples. This 1777 issue falls early in his reign, before the catastrophic final decades that would see him stripped of the Papal States by Napoleon and die a French prisoner at Valence in 1799 — the last pope to die in captivity until that point in modern history.
The "Holy Mother Church" type was struck at Rome under the direction of the Camera Apostolica. Berman 2980 identifies this as a distinct emission from the broader Pius VI silver coinage, which spans an unusually long pontificate of nearly a quarter century.
