| Reverse description | Central device depicts a radiant star or sun burst rising above a horizon line rendered as a low hillock or mound, with stylized waves of water below suggesting the sea, an allusion to the papal motto VMBRAM IN LVCEM — 'from shadow into light.' The radiating star dominates the upper field, emitting long straight rays in all directions against a plain ground. The date 1706 is inscribed in the lower exergue in large numerals. The circumferential Latin legend VMBRAM. IN. LVCEM flanks the central device, completing the devotional and emblematic program of the reverse. |

Clement XI's pontificate was dominated almost immediately by the War of the Spanish Succession, and 1706 was among its most punishing years — the same year Imperial forces under Eugene of Savoy routed the French at Turin and began pressing into papal territory. Clement's political navigation between the Habsburgs and Bourbons was catastrophic; he recognized Philip V of Spain, then was effectively coerced into reversing course, satisfying neither side. Papal finances reflected the strain.
MIR 2257/1 distinguishes the first die marriage of this type. Population in high grades is thin.
