Bolivia's fractional gold coinage of this period was tied directly to the republic's chronic shortage of small-denomination specie following independence. The 1/2 Scudo, struck at Potosí, filled a gap in everyday commerce that silver alone couldn't adequately address given the instability of exchange rates between the two metals throughout the 1840s.
KM#104 is scarce in any grade — surviving examples rarely appear at auction, a reflection of low original mintages and the high attrition rate of small gold coins in active circulation.
