Philip I, Count Palatine of the Rhône and Duke of Bavaria, governed the Upper Palatinate during a period of persistent Habsburg pressure on Palatine autonomy. His coinage rights in the region were a point of ongoing friction with Maximilian I, who was actively consolidating imperial authority over smaller territorial mints in precisely these years.
