Said bin Taimur ruled Oman with deliberate isolation — no roads, no schools, no hospitals without his personal approval — and the gold coinage issued under his name reflects the same insularity. These pieces were struck at the Royal Mint in London and were never intended for ordinary commerce. The half Saidi Rial in gold served primarily a ceremonial and gift function, circulating among the sultan's court and foreign dignitaries rather than in any bazaar.
Said was deposed by his own son Qaboos in a palace coup in July 1970, ending the series abruptly.
