Obverse description Central field dominated by the crowned Portuguese royal arms — a shield quartered with the quinas (five escutcheons bearing bezants) and bordered by the castles of the kingdom — surmounted by a royal crown. The armorial shield is rendered in fine relief typical of mid-16th century Portuguese hammered gold coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading SEBASTIANVS : I : REX : PORTVGALIÆ : ET, identifying the issuer as King Sebastião I of Portugal. The legend is set between two concentric borders, the outer of which shows a beaded or denticulated rim characteristic of Lisbon Mint production of this period.
