Additional information

João III died in 1557, and this denomination was struck in the final years of his reign as Portugal's Atlantic trade empire reached its administrative peak — Goa firmly held, Brazil producing revenue, and the crown managing an extraordinary flow of wealth that the Lisbon mint translated into fractional gold for everyday commercial use. The São Vicente series takes its name from the patron saint of Lisbon, whose cult João III actively promoted.

Gomes J3 180 is among the more elusive João III gold references. Strike quality varies considerably across the type, a known characteristic of the series rather than individual coin condition.
