Reverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms, comprising the quintas shield with five escutcheons each bearing five bezants and a red bordure charged with seven castles, is displayed at center within a circular lined border. This armorial composition is superimposed upon a Maltese Cross whose four arms extend to the coin's periphery, with each arm terminating in pointed tips in the manner of the Order of Christ cross. The legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA curves around the upper periphery, and the date 1936 appears in the lower exergual area below the cross.
