Shah Alam II died in 1806, yet the Bengal Presidency continued striking coins in his name for decades afterward — a deliberate fiction maintained by the East India Company to avoid the political friction of asserting overt British authority over Mughal coinage. The practice reflected a calculated conservatism: Indian merchants and money changers trusted the established regal type, and the Company saw no commercial reason to disturb that confidence.
By 1819, the Mughal emperor on the throne was Akbar II, rendering this coin's inscription a full thirteen years out of date.
