Muhammad Akbar II ruled as Mughal emperor from 1806 until his death in 1837, but by that point the dynasty held no real power — the East India Company administered nearly everything of consequence. The Maratha confederacy's issuance of coinage in his name during this window reflects the complex tributary fiction that persisted well after Mughal political authority had collapsed, with regional powers invoking imperial legitimacy they no longer needed to earn.
