Banswara was among the smaller Rajput princely states in what is now southern Rajasthan, and its coinage has never received the scholarly attention given to larger neighbors like Mewar or Kotah. Lakshman Singh ruled from 1844 to 1905, an unusually long tenure that saw the state navigate the full consolidation of British paramountcy following the 1857 uprising. Local coinage rights were one of the few visible marks of sovereignty Rajput chiefs retained, which made continued minting politically meaningful even as British Indian currency displaced native issues in daily commerce.
