The Bombay Presidency's coinage under William and Mary sits in a peculiar administrative gap: the East India Company had only recently recovered Bombay from a disastrous military venture under Child's War, a conflict the Company itself had provoked against the Mughal Empire and catastrophically lost by 1690. Minting resumed under royal authority, but the Company's position in western India remained fragile enough that these coins circulated alongside Mughal issues without any guarantee of acceptance.
Production at the Bombay mint in this period was erratic, dependent on bullion shipments from England that arrived irregularly.
