The 1950–51 half rupee belongs to the last coinage series issued for Mauritius under George VI before his death in February 1952. By this point the King-Emperor title had already been dropped following Indian independence in 1947, a change reflected quietly in the obverse legend of coins across British colonial issues from 1949 onward. Mauritius would not gain independence itself until 1968, but the shift in imperial nomenclature runs through this entire denomination.
