Obverse description Persian legend in multiple lines occupying the central field, reading the royal formula attributing the coinage to Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah Alam. The inscription is rendered in a characteristically fluid Nastaliq calligraphic style, with the hijri date 1229 appearing in the lower portion of the field. The flat, undecorated field is typical of hammered Awadh coinage of this period, with no border ornament.
