Amanullah Khan declared Afghan independence from British control in 1919, and the Third Anglo-Afghan War that followed lasted less than a month before Britain conceded suzerainty over Afghan foreign affairs. This coin was struck almost simultaneously with that declaration, making early issues from 1919 direct products of a government asserting its autonomous monetary authority for the first time in the modern sense. The Kabul mint's output during this transitional period was inconsistent, and weight tolerances on early Amanullah issues are notoriously variable.
