Additional information

Alamgir II was the Mughal emperor in name only by this period — effectively a puppet, first of the Marathas and then of the Afghan warlord Ahmad Shah Durrani, who had him murdered in 1759. The Arcot Nawabate struck in his regnal name as a matter of political convention, not loyalty. By the mid-1750s, the Nawabate itself was caught between the British and French East India Companies fighting proxy wars across the Carnatic, a conflict that would effectively end Arcot's independence within a generation.
