Gibraltar's Royal series, launched in the early 1990s, was produced by the Pobjoy Mint under license from the Gibraltar Government and targeted squarely at the collector and bullion crossover market. The Pekingese issue belongs to a multi-year run of dog-themed halves and full Royals that proved commercially shrewd — the breed subjects were rotated annually, generating repeat buyers across the series. The .9999 fineness was a deliberate step above the standard .9167 gold used in many Commonwealth bullion issues of the period, positioning these pieces against Canadian Maple Leafs rather than Sovereigns.
