Groningen's city authorities countermarked foreign gold as a practical response to the monetary chaos of the Dutch Revolt — Spanish disruption of normal trade routes and mint supplies forced northern cities to validate and re-circulate whatever coinage was available rather than strike fresh. The English Rose Noble, by then an older denomination, was among the foreign gold deemed trustworthy enough to receive official sanction for local use.
KM# 11.1 distinguishes this as one of several countermark varieties applied by Groningen during this period, the specific punch placement being the primary differentiator between catalog numbers.
