Reverse description The reverse depicts an armoured equestrian figure of King James III facing right at full gallop, the king raising a sword aloft in his right hand and bearing a shield on his left arm, the horse richly caparisoned. The mounted figure is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the devotional legend disposed around the outer annulus between two beaded borders. The vigorous, dynamic treatment of the horse and rider is characteristic of the Rider coinage type introduced during the reign of James III, reflecting the influence of contemporary Burgundian gold coinage.
