Issued as part of Oman's first commemorative silver series under Sultan Qaboos, who had deposed his father Said bin Taimur in a bloodless palace coup just four years earlier in 1970. The new government moved quickly to modernize the country's institutions, and the Central Bank of Oman itself had only been established in 1974 — making this coin among the earliest issues struck under its authority.
Sohar's significance here is deliberate: the port city is traditionally identified as the birthplace of Sindbad the Sailor and was medieval Arabia's most important commercial harbor, a pointed reference to Oman's maritime heritage at a moment when the new regime was constructing a national identity from scratch.
