Obverse description City arms of Magdeburg depicted as a fortified gateway with towers, surmounted by a figure of the Virgin Mary holding a sceptre, all within a beaded inner circle. The circular legend reads MO. NO. CIVI . MAGDEBVRGENSIS, identifying this as a new coin of the City of Magdeburg. The design is rendered in the characteristic late-Renaissance hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century German municipal coinage.
