Obverse description Central device depicts a stylized five-petaled flowering plant or tulip motif enclosed within a raised inner circle, flanked by the denomination '1/2' to the left and 'R' to the right within the inner circle. The surrounding legend reads '10 D. 20 G.' at the top and 'M. 1842' at the bottom, separated by dot stops, all within a beaded outer border. This constitutes the Type VII countermark applied by the Costa Rican government to validate host coins for continued circulation. The countermark is struck in a small circular punch impression over the face of the host coin.
