One of the earliest examples of domestically printed paper money in South America, this note was produced entirely within Asunción at a time when most regional governments were still dependent on European printers. Charles Riviere operated a small lithographic shop in the Paraguayan capital, and the Tesoro Nacional turned to him out of necessity — Francisco Solano López's government was actively building self-sufficient national infrastructure well before the catastrophic War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870) would make foreign supply chains impossible.
The watermark security feature is notable given the primitive local production environment. Pick 7 is among the scarcer of the Riviere-printed issues.
