| Reverse description | The reverse displays the Portuguese royal arms arranged in a quartered shield composition, featuring the escutcheons of Portugal with the characteristic quinas (five bezants in saltire on blue fields) alongside the castles of the kingdom, all rendered in low relief typical of hammered medieval coinage. The heraldic composition is set within a beaded inner circle. The peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters runs around the entire circumference of the coin. The flan is irregular, as is customary for struck copper issues of this period. |
