Obverse description Central field displays a large Gothic letter 'E' surmounted by a royal crown, with the mint mark 'P' (for Porto) positioned to the right of the crowned initial. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the royal legend rendered in uncial Latin characters disposed around the periphery. The striking is characteristic of hammered Portuguese medieval coinage, with irregular flan and moderate relief. The crowned initial type reflects the monogram coinage tradition established under the House of Aviz.
