| Reverse description | The reverse displays a quartered shield bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León, arranged in the standard Spanish royal arms pattern, struck crudely on an irregular planchet. A cross with flared or plain terminals divides the shield into four quarters, consistent with the macuquina style of the Potosí Mint. The mint mark 'P' and the assayer's initial are visible in the quarters of the cross, along with a partial date. The surrounding Latin legend, referencing Potosí and the regnal year, is characteristically incomplete and off-center. The entire design reflects the rough artisanal quality inherent to hammered cob coinage of colonial Spanish America. |
