1/2 Real - Pedro I Coruna

Pedro I of Castile — "the Cruel" to his enemies, "the Just" to his partisans — struck these reales during a reign defined by civil war against his illegitimate half-brother Enrique de Trastámara, who was backed by French mercenary companies under Bertrand du Guesclin. The Coruña mint was one of several Pedro maintained throughout Castile, and output fluctuated sharply as military fortunes shifted. Pedro was ultimately defeated and killed at Montiel in 1369, and the victorious Trastámara dynasty systematically suppressed his coinage.
