Obverse description Central field displays a large Gothic monogram of the royal cipher 'IhS' (Iohannes) surmounted by an ornate royal crown, all set within a beaded inner circle. The monogram is rendered in a bold, raised Gothic script typical of late 14th-century Portuguese hammered coinage. A continuous Latin legend in uncial characters surrounds the central device along the coin's periphery, reading IHNS DEI GRA REX PO AL, abbreviated for Iohannes Dei Gratia Rex Portugalie et Algarbii. The overall design is characteristic of the monetary reforms of João I of the House of Aviz.
