Reverse description Central field features a cross pattée around which four Portuguese royal shields are arranged in the quarters, each shield displaying the characteristic quinas (five escutcheons charged with bezants) of the Kingdom of Portugal. The shields in the lateral quarters are shown in a somewhat elongated form, while those at top and bottom are more compact, reflecting the hand-struck irregular style of medieval Portuguese billon coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, and a continuous uncial Latin legend runs along the outer periphery reading ADVTORIVM NOSTRVM Q, an abbreviated devotional inscription derived from Psalm 124. The reverse design is consistent with the standard type struck for João I at the Porto mint.
