Reverse description Central device consists of the Portuguese royal arms: a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants in saltire) set within an ornate cross pattée, the four quarters separated by pellets or small roundels. The shield is framed by a double incuse border. The circumferential legend in Gothic lettering reads + IhnS : DEI : GRA : REX : POR, followed by the Évora mint mark and VOR, identifying King João I as King of Portugal and the Algarve by the Grace of God. The execution is characteristic of hammered medieval Portuguese coinage.
