Pattern coinage from the opening years of Isabella II's reign was produced amid a chaotic regency period — her mother María Cristina had already fled to France by 1840 following liberal uprisings, leaving General Espartero as regent until he too was ousted in 1843, the very year of this strike. The new coinage designs being tested that year were part of a broader effort to stabilize monetary identity around a thirteen-year-old queen who had just been declared of age by the Cortes, two years ahead of schedule, specifically to end Espartero's regency.
