Zacatecas began striking its own coinage in 1810 after royalist authorities lost reliable access to Mexico City's mint amid the insurgency. This half real belongs to the later phase of that arrangement, produced while the intendancy still nominally held the city but insurgent forces periodically threatened the surrounding silver-producing region — the very region supplying the metal being coined. The local assayers' initials found on these pieces vary enough across the 1819–1821 run to interest specialists tracking personnel changes at the mint during the war's final years.
