The coin is hammered and of irregular flan, characteristic of the provisional Royalist emergency coinage issued at Zacatecas during the Mexican War of Independence. |

The Zacatecas mint was only authorized to strike coins in 1810 as New Spain's established mints came under threat from Hidalgo's insurgency. This half real belongs to the earliest output of that emergency authorization — crude by metropolitan standards, produced by a facility scrambling to assert Royalist fiscal continuity while the colony fractured around it.
The "macuquina" style of these early Zacatecas strikes reflects the haste of improvised production rather than any archaic tradition.
