| Obverse description | Central field displays the conjoined royal monogram of Ferdinand and Isabella — the interlaced Gothic letters F and Y (for Ysabel) — crowned above by a royal crown, all rendered in high relief in the hammered style. The mintmark of Toledo (a small crown above the letter T) appears in the lower field beneath the monogram. The entire central device is enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a Latin circular legend reading FERNANDVS·ET·ELISABET T, separated by a cross as punctuation. The lettering is in Gothic script characteristic of late 15th- and early 16th-century Castilian coinage, somewhat irregular due to the hand-struck technique. The flan is slightly irregular in shape, as is typical of hammered half reales of this issue. |
