Ferdinand of Bavaria held the Prince-Bishopric of Liège from 1612 until his death in 1650, simultaneously accumulating ecclesiastical offices across the Lower Rhine with a thoroughness that alarmed even his allies. The years 1622–1623 placed his territory directly in the path of the Thirty Years' War's western spill — Spinola's Army of Flanders was operating nearby, and the monetary disruption of the Kipper und Wipperzeit had so thoroughly debased coinage across the region that small silver fractions like this were being minted and reminted at an accelerated pace simply to maintain transactional confidence.
