Obverse description Crowned royal arms shield, flanked by the assayer's initial and the denomination mark, all within a partial encircling legend in Latin. Due to the irregular cob (macuquina) striking technique, the design is almost never fully legible or contained within the flan, resulting in partial impressions being the norm rather than the exception.

Reverse description Two crowned hemispheres flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, with a partial Latin legend encircling the design and the date appearing at the bottom. As is characteristic of cob coinage of this period, the reverse design is almost invariably struck out of flan, rendering the full composition only rarely visible on any given specimen.
