Felipe V abdicated in January 1724 in favor of his son Luis I, then reclaimed the throne seven months later following Luis's death from smallpox. The resulting administrative disruption at the Mexico City mint contributed to inconsistent output during the early 1730s. These cob-style macuquina pieces were already an anachronism by this date — the transition to milled coinage at Mexico City was mandated by royal decree in 1732, making this type one of the last hammered issues from the hemisphere's busiest mint.
