Felipe IV inherited the Spanish throne in 1621 at sixteen and immediately faced the resumption of war with the Dutch Republic after the Twelve Years' Truce expired. The Segovia mint, powered by one of the earliest hydraulic minting installations in Europe, was among the few Castilian facilities capable of producing consistent round, machine-struck coinage during a period when most Spanish silver was being hammered out as cobs for shipment from the American colonies.
The forty-two year span of this type reflects not continuity but administrative inertia — Felipe IV's reign was one of near-constant fiscal crisis, with the Crown repeatedly debasing and restamping copper vellón coinage to service war debts.
