| Obverse description | Central device consists of a crowned royal cipher formed by the interlaced monogram of Philip III (the letters P, H, and S intertwined), surmounted by a large royal crown in relief. The mintmark and assayer's initial appear to the lower left of the cipher. The surrounding legend reads PHILIPP·III·D·G, separated by pellets, all contained within a beaded inner border running along the coin's circumference. The overall style is characteristic of early seventeenth-century Spanish milled coinage produced on roller presses. |
